Deb received a call this morning from Alan while it was still early and she hadn't had quite enough coffee to feel completely coherent. He was out getting the paper down at the mailbox when he noticed that Anastacia and Alexios were both out of their pen and in the bigger pasture. Perhaps she had intended for this to happen? Ummm, no. She told him she'd be down as quickly as she could. That means a 45 minute drive from home to pasture. It really wasn't an emergency as Alexios was with his momma and she would keep him safe, but still, it wasn't preferable for him to be out of the secure confines of the pen so soon.
When Deb arrived she found the route of escape. There is one section of the pen that was tied closed with a lead rope rather than secured with the pins that are on each panel. The gate to the pen makes a bit of a racket when opened so Deb had set this up the night of the birth so that Anstacia would not be startled as she went in and out of the pen. She left it that way so that Alexios would not get riled up each time she went in and out.
Of course, to a curious and rowdy colt, it was irresistible and so he figured out how to squeeze through the gap. No doubt, once he was on the other side he soon realized it was not where he wanted to be. Anastacia somehow managed to untie the rope and push the panels far enough apart for her to squeeze through and join him. We're not sure how long they were out in the pasture but they were both very anxious to get back into the pen when Deb showed up.
Poesia and Favorito are in a separate but adjoining pasture so they were also on high alert when Deb arrived. Poesia no doubt highly approved of Anastacia's actions in getting to her baby but probably would have liked to have a stern word with Alexios for creating such a ruckus. Favorito, Alexios' daddy, was also quite concerned.
Momma and baby were highly relieved to be back in the pen, and Alexios appeared to be quite contrite. It's a big world out there and I guess he realized he's not quite ready for it.
He was also a very, very sleepy little guy. He did nurse a little but could barely stay awake.
Soon, he was lying down.
Sleep wasn't going to be kept at bay.
This wasn't going to be a quick nap either.
No gravity pulled at him.
Too tired to even hold his head up, he gave in.
Fully stretched out, the little one slept heavily.
Who knows what dreams went prancing through his head.
In some of the photos above you can see the remains of his umbilical cord. It is drying out, shriveling up, and will eventually just drop off.
