This has proven to be an even crazier week for me than I'd anticipated so once again Deb was solo at the pasture with camera in hand. She is doing a very fine job of capturing our young one and even worked up the courage to use my camera rather than the one with which she is more familiar.
Every visit now includes grazing time for mother and son. Today, Anastacia went right out to the pasture but Alexios hung back with Deb. He seemed to really want her attention, and lots of scratches all over. Then, suddenly he realized that mom was on the other side of the gate and took off after her.
He always has to do a little prancing before he settles down to graze.
Deb followed him out and, for the first time, he let her just walk up to him and start petting him all over. He has become so used to the camera that she could use it close up and it didn't disturb him at all.
He is easily distracted, just like all little kids, and soon went to see what mom was doing.
Of course, it was nothing very exciting. Just grazing.
The day was too beautiful for such a sedate undertaking, so off he went again, chasing the wind.
This shot shows just how much his tail has grown in the past 6 weeks. His mane still stands straight up but soon enough it will also be long and flowing.
Once he'd burned off some energy, he allowed Deb to approach and handle him again. She petted him all over and made sure to include running her hands down his legs. In the next couple of weeks he will have his first experience with the farrier. His hooves are not yet long enough to be trimmed but it is so very important that he learn to stand quietly while his feet are picked up and worked on.
Once his lessons for the day were done, he headed off for lunch. Nursing is still giving him his main nutrition.
Here he looks as if he's saying to Deb "What? Can't a guy get a drink around here?".
They grazed together a little longer before Deb brought them back into the pen for their feed.
I don't know if many of you remember that there was a point when he could walk right under her belly. Those days are long gone!
